Day 6, Thursday

I'm realizing my days are all messed up already. Today is day 6.  I need a calendar beside me at all times. I also made a mistake on the title of this blog - the word, 'home' should be capitalized... not sure how to fix that, but it drives me nuts.

Had a good visit tonight.  Poor boy is tired.  He's back on a ventilator, which is doing a lot of work for him.  Everything with these babies has some give and take.  They want him to grow, but at the same time, they want to challenge his lungs.  But, he can't grow if his lungs are being challenged too much.  They want to feed him (1cc every 6-4 hrs), but he's not tolerating the feeding super well, so some feeds are skipped.  There are so many fine details.  The nurse tonight (Kathy) gave us some good advice.  She said not to look at the small details like that but focus on whether he looks comfortable, has he gained weight, is he more pink, etc.  Those are the first things I notice when we arrive.  He really looks different with each day.  He definitely looks like his dad.  He opened his right eye today, I'm pretty sure he can't see us, but it was nice to see him peek in our direction.  The nurse gave us a bunch of handouts explaining some of the details of things we've talked about.  They're helpful.  I just have to remember to actually read them. Oh - and we weighed him and he's almost up to his birth-weight.  Hooray!

Had a nice long visit with Sadie today - fortunately, she's super into Barney, so I managed to keep her in one place for a while.  She's doing really well with Grandma and Grampy and we'll be eternally grateful for all the time and effort they've given to her since this all started. It helps me sleep at night knowing she's just as happy with them as she is at home.  I'm hoping for a speedy recovery so I can have her at home more often - it's just too hard right now since I still have to 'recover'... oh yeah, I had major surgery less than a week ago...

Baxter is doing ok - unfortunately at this point, I'm having to let other people take responsibility for him.  Looking forward to getting back to walks with my boy.

Scott - well he's taking care of everything. and working.
